Hembadoon – Lady (Audio)
Morenike “Hembadoon” Peter-Thomas is a seasoned singer and songwriter with a wealth of experience in Musical Arts and Performance, as well as in Public Relations and Advertising spanning over a decade of corporate work experience.
Having spent most of her formative years in Jos Plateau State, the lover of all things musical started her professional music career working with Icon Towers Production in 2002 where she wrote and performed songs as part of the CYRUS musical group including crowd favorite “Boi” a hip-hop gospel track. As part of Cyrus, she played active roles in concert organization and performances at different concerts and event shows in Jos.
In 2005, Hembadoon was part of a recording project under the Blackcollar Entertainment and her single “Odo Aye” (River of Life) a Yoruba infused song, was No. 1 on the Radio charts in Abuja, Plateau, Niger, Nassarawa and Kadunastates.
The single was also adopted as a soundtrack feature on the BBC TV/ RADIO DRAMA SERIES “Wetin Dey”. It is worthy of note that writing songs in Nigerian languages she’s familiar with – Tiv, Pidgin and Yoruba, is one of Hembadoon’s strong qualities as a songwriter.
In 2004 she was part of the British Council ‘Connecting Futures’ programme in Kaduna Nigeria with the group Cyrus. In 2005, Hembadoon served as backup singer for South African singer “Sonti Mndebele” who worked with the award winning singer Paul Simon on his Graceland: The African Tour, while on the Nigerian leg of her tour to promote her album. Her fellow backup singers included her musical peers Lindsey Abudei and Ruby Gyang.
Over the course of her career, Hembadoon has worked as an On-Air- Personality and News Anchor at Abuja listed Zuma 88.5FM Radio, has helped promote projects in Nigerian entertainment for record labels Finesse Entertainment and Chocolate City Entertainment, and worked with artistes like Rooftop MCs, Jazzman Olofin, Entertainment personality and winner of first ever Big Brother Naija, Katung Aduwak. She’s also worked as contributing entertainment writer for Leadership Newspapers and as a Copywriter for Buki HQ Media Lagos.
Hembadoon’s current work towards her first album project is aligned with her passion as a singer and songwriter; she’s intrigued and influenced by the sounds of Angelique Kidjo, Alicia Keys, Erica Badhu, Onyeka Onwenu, Yvonne Chaka-Chaka, Youssou N’Dour and Femi Kuti. She spent her early years listening to various sounds from Fuji to Raggae, to Rap to Afrobeat and ethnic music; and still is a huge and devoted fan of Nigerian music in general. Hembadoon hopes that her career will blossom and profile a rich and personal international singer/ songwriting catalogue featuring in theatre, film, animation and stage.
Hembadoon is a wife and mother of two, a firm believer in faith, fate and destinies; she plays Tennis for fitness and leisure, writes, listens to music and plays scrabble in her spare time. She has worked on musical pieces and performed with notable artistes over the years. She currently runs her Public Relations outfit working as Principal Consultant and serving Small Businesses as well as providing Tech based Event services and Research content. She is also a contributing writer for a Sexual and Reproductive Health NGO, Love Matters Naija.
